- About Cold Spray
- With heat treatment, plating, thermal spraying material properties will change
- Wish to repair parts which warp by heat when using welding to surface build up
- Wish to coat large area in a short time
These problems can be overcome with "Cold Spray"
What is Cold Spray
■A technology enabling minimal change to material characteristics due to heat, minimal oxidation.
A technology to bombard material without melting or gassing at super sonic speed, still in a solid form with inert gas on to the substrate to form coating layer. The material travelling at super sonic speed will reach critical velocity and the particle will plastic deform to create a coating surface. Thus, unlike other thermal spray, properties of the material will not change by rise of temperature enabling coating with only minimal oxidation.
Cold Spray System
At Plasma Giken, cold spray systems are developed and marketed. Photo shows PCS-1000 system. From L->R power source, powder feeder, cold spray gun with heater, gas control unit and controller with touch panel.

Field of Applications of Cold Spray
Cold Spray system is widely accepted in various field of the industry which require state of the art technology and various requirements of the surface treatment conditions in such fields as Electric Power, Gas Turbines, Energy, Semiconductor products, Batteries and others.
■Electric Power
As cold Spray surpass other thermal sprays, when making thick copper coating films in large areas in a short period of time, it is starting to be applied at transformer stations.
■Gas Turbine
Surface build up for gas turbine blade repairs, Ti alloys and Ni based metals with high heat resistant alloys are used. In contrast to repair by welding, blades are not warped by heat with this repair system.
■Energy
Metal sputtering targets used at production line of solar panels are now transitioning to cylindrical shapes. The backing tube in excess of 2 meters which can be directly sprayed to form a thick layer is very fitting for this production methods.
■Semiconductor products
Heat dissipation plates for power modules use copper, aluminum nitride for copper electrode patterns, this spray system is being researched.
Example of Cold Spray Coating
On to stainless steel pipe, 25mm coating is formed and then machined.
